Frequently Asked Questions
Why did my image get bigger when I compressed it before?
Re-encoding an already-compressed photo at a similar quality can add encoding overhead, so the file grows instead of shrinking. This tool never hands you a bigger file: it only delivers a result that is genuinely smaller than your original, and says so plainly when an image is already well optimised.
What if my image won't get any smaller?
Some images are already well optimised. In that case the tool says so plainly and offers two one-click options that genuinely shrink a photo: resize to a smaller max width (1920px, 1280px or 800px presets) or convert to WebP. Resizing is the most effective way to shrink a photo.
How does the target size option work?
Pick a preset β 100 KB, 200 KB, 400 KB, 500 KB, 1 MB or 2 MB β or enter your own target. The tool first searches for the highest quality that meets your target. If quality alone cannot reach it, it steps the dimensions down until it hits. If the target is unreachable without heavy damage, it tells you honestly and shows the closest size it can reach, instead of ruining the photo.
Is there a file size limit?
Yes β 20 MB per image. That covers nearly all photos from phones and cameras. Larger files can be resized first with the Image Resizer.
Are my images uploaded anywhere?
No. Compression happens entirely in your browser. Your image never leaves your device, and closing the tab removes it.
