What cookies are

Cookies are small files your browser stores when you visit a site. Some are set by us ("first-party"), others by services we use, such as Google ("third-party"). We also use your browser's local storage for a couple of preferences, which works like a cookie.

Cookies we use

Strictly necessary. If you create a free account, sign-in and session cookies keep you logged in and protect your account. The site works without them if you don't sign in.

Preferences. We remember choices you make on the site, such as dark mode and your cookie-bar choice (Accept / Reject). These are stored in your browser's local storage, not sent to our servers.

Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand which guides readers find useful — for example, which articles get read and which search terms bring visitors. This data is aggregated. We don't build profiles of individual readers, and we never sell analytics data.

Advertising. We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google's advertising cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) let Google and its partners serve ads based on your visits to this site and other sites, and are used for ad personalization, measurement, and fraud prevention.

Your choices

• Cookie bar: when you first visit, the bar at the bottom of the page lets you Accept or Reject cookies. Your choice is remembered. Accepting means you consent to the cookies described above.
• Browser settings: you can delete or block cookies through your browser settings at any time. Blocking cookies may affect some parts of the site (including ads and sign-in), but articles remain fully readable.
• Personalized ads: you can opt out of personalized advertising in Google's Ads Settings, or opt out of some third-party vendors' use of cookies for personalized advertising at aboutads.info/choices.
